Mental health covers our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It has an influence on how we think, feel, and act. It also helps workout how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important in every part of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Throughout your life, if you experience mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected. Many elements are part of mental health problems, including:
- Biological factors, e.g. genes and brain chemicals
- Life experiences, e.g. abuse and trauma
- Family history of mental health problems
Mental health problems have become common but help is also there. People with mental health problems can get better and many recover fully.
Early Warning Signs
If you are not sure if someone has mental health problems? There are some symptoms that indicate an early warning sign of a problem:
- Eating or sleeping too little or too much
- Not doing your usual activities and not socializing
- Having little or no energy
- Feeling like nothing matters or numb
- Feeling unexplained pain and aches
- Feeling hopeless or helpless
- Drinking, smoking, or using drugs more than usual
- Feeling unusually forgetful , confused, on edge, worried , upset, angry , or scared
- Shouting or fighting with family and friends
- Having persistent thoughts and memories you can’t get out of your head
- Experiencing severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships
- Thinking of harming yourself or others
- Hearing voices or believing things that are not true
- Being unable to perform daily tasks like taking care of your kids or getting to work or school
