Group Therapy
Group therapy is about more than two people who joined a group for similar problems, in the group they learn connectivity, belonging, sharing their problems, learning ways of coping and helping each other with their problems. Group consists of five to eight members and the therapist works as a leader to lead them, build new skills and ways to overcome those problems for which they entered in a group therapy protocol.
Examples: problem such as smoking cessation, substance use, anxiety disorder, loneliness, relationship problems, depression, grief, children’s problems, schizophrenic groups, parents with disabled children, etc.
- People at the beginning of the process will have an injection of hope after seeing people who are recovering or coping
- By being part of a group who have same experiences assists people in seeing that they are not alone and their experiences are universal
- By sharing information group members can help each other
- By interacting with other members and receiving feedback from the therapist and members, the group members can experience positive learning and increase their understanding about themselves
- Individuals can observe and copy the therapist or model the behavior of other members of the group.
- Group members will help the other members of the group, this will increase their confidence and self-esteem
- While working within a group offers help and direction, group therapy helps members understand that they are responsible for their own choices, actions and lives
- Since the group is united for a common goal, members get a sense of belonging and acceptance
- Expressing your experiences and feelings within a group can assist in relieving stress, pain and guilt
